Rev. Robert W. Shreve, 78, of Sumner, died Sunday, March 24, 2013, at Maple Crest Manor in Fayette, from injuries received in an auto accident which occurred on February 28.

Funeral service will be held 11:00 a.m. Wednesday, March 27, 2013, at the United Methodist Church in Sumner with Rev. Merrill Siler officiating. Committal service will be 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at Littleton Cemetery in Littleton with military rites provided by Thomas E. Woods Post #223, American Legion of Sumner. Friends may call from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, March 26, 2013, at Becker-Milnes Funeral Home in Sumner and for one hour prior to services at the church on Wednesday. Memorials may be made in his name to either the Union or Randalia United Methodist Churches.

Robert William Shreve, son of William Niles and Hermina Henning Shreve, was born May 16, 1934, at Iowa City, Iowa. He graduated from Bristow High School, received his Bachelor’s degree from the University of Northern Iowa, and his Master of Divinity degree from St. Paul’s School of Theology in Kansas City, Missouri. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. On October 13, 1956, he was united in marriage with Marguerite Roberts at the United Methodist Church in Oran where he had been baptized one week earlier. Rev. Shreve served many United Methodist Churches throughout the state and was currently serving as pastor of the United Methodist Churches of Randalia and Union. In addition to his ministry, he enjoyed his family, playing golf, and visiting with friends.

In addition to his wife, Marguerite of Sumner, he is survived by three daughters, Robin (Gary) Wurster of Fayette, Barbara Shreve of Sumner, and Marilyn O’Brien of Grimes; four grandchildren, Lisa Ritchie of Ames, Robbie Ritchie of Grand Junction, Iowa, Holly Mendralla of Carpentersville, Illinois, and Stefan (Jolene) Wurster of Elgin; four great grandchildren, Emma Cram, Gavin Cram, Sumerlin Cram, all of Elgin, and Allison Mendralla of Carpentersville, Illinois; a brother, Darwin (JoAnne) Shreve of Marble Rock; three sisters, Vada Shreve and Kathy (Chuck) Smith, both of Allison, and Carol Arjes of Greene; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Rodney Shreve; and a brother-in-law, Delvin Arjes.

Marguerite and family - so sorry to hear about Rev. Bob's transition to Heaven. He was a wonderful person and a very compassionate man. Even though we had lost touch since your family lived in Rippey, IA, I still have the Bible that the two of you gave me at that time, and I remember you and your family with fond memories. I was saddened to learn of the passing of someone that had such a special place in our hearts. Rev Bob and Marguerite were both so caring and considerate of my mother, Neva Keplinger and our family as she fought her battle with cancer. This would have in 1972 while he served Tingley, Ellston, & Wishard Chapel.

He touched many lives....ours among them. May God grant you the peace that passes all understanding.

Dear Marguerite and extended family,

We have many treasured memories of Pastor Bob when I was in the Youth Bible Studies in your home when I was a teenager and when Pastor Bob married us with Pastor Oliver Paul in December 1973. Steve and I enjoyed whenever we would visit at St. Mark's UMC and would see Pastor Bob and Marguerite and Barbie. We love your family and we are lifting you all in prayers for comfort from the Holy Spirt today and in the days ahead. We know that God will give you the peace that passes all human understanding and you know you have many friends that are lifting your family up in prayers too. God Bless You All and keep in touch.
